Do You Need a Licence to Rent a Motorbike in Bali? IDP Explained
Short answer: yes. To ride legally in Bali you need an International Driving Permit with a motorcycle category, your home country licence, and your passport. We ask for all three, and so do the police.
What the rules actually are
Indonesia recognises the International Driving Permit as a translation of your national licence — not as a licence in its own right. That means two documents work together:
- Your home country driving licence, valid, with a motorcycle entitlement on it. If your home licence only covers cars, an IDP cannot add motorcycles to it.
- The IDP itself, issued in the same country as that licence, with the motorcycle category ticked.
Plus your passport, which is what identifies you at a roadside check. Carry all of it whenever you ride — leaving the documents in the villa safe is the most common way people end up paying a fine.
Getting an IDP
You get it at home, before you fly. It is issued by the motoring authority or automobile association in your own country, usually within a day or two, sometimes over the counter. It is not something you can obtain properly once you are already in Bali, and the various "instant international licence" services sold locally are not the same document.
An IDP is normally valid for one year from the date of issue, so check the expiry if you are on a long trip — an expired IDP is treated exactly like no IDP at all.
What happens if you ride without one
Two things, and the second is the expensive one.
The first is the police check. They are routine on the main roads — Sunset Road, the Kuta bypass, the roads into Ubud — and riding without a valid permit means a fine on the spot.
The second matters far more: insurance will not pay out. If you are in an accident without a licence valid for the vehicle you were riding, the cover is void. That applies to travel insurance from home as much as to rental cover here. A minor crash on a scooter can mean a hospital bill in the thousands of dollars, and the difference between "covered" and "not covered" is a document that costs very little to obtain before you leave.
Do you need a big-bike category?
If you want one of the larger machines — 400cc and up — your home entitlement needs to cover that class of motorcycle, not just small ones. Several countries issue tiered motorcycle licences with power limits, and those limits travel with you. We check this when you book: it protects you, and it keeps the insurance valid.
If your licence covers only smaller motorcycles, there is still plenty to ride. Our automatic scooters and the 250cc class cover most of what people actually want to do on the island.

We do not hold your passport. The contract sets out the terms, and any deposit arrangement is agreed with you before the bike is handed over.
Riding safely, beyond the paperwork
A helmet is compulsory by law in Bali for both rider and passenger, and we supply them with every rental. Beyond that: Balinese traffic flows differently from European or American traffic — gaps get filled, overtaking happens on both sides, and right of way is negotiated rather than enforced. Ride defensively for the first few days, avoid the coastal roads at sunset when everyone is heading to the beach, and do not ride after drinking. Most tourist accidents here involve a rider with no experience, no helmet, or both.

Can I rent a motorbike in Bali without an international licence?
